Play Above the Rim …

Don’t lower your expectations … lower the rim!

Yes, there is a story behind the message. I grew up in a basketball crazy area of Kansas City, Kansas and attended Wyandotte High School. During the glory days Wyandotte was State Champions in basketball ten out of fourteen years. And I had the real pleasure of playing on the school grounds with many outstanding players including Lucius Allen and Pierre Russell, who went on to have great college and professional basketball careers.

Although I didn’t play in high school, I absolutely loved the sport and always dreamed of growing up to be 6’2” or taller so I could dunk a basketball. Well, I didn’t quite get there. I’m barely 5’8” in shoes, on a good day, with a mediocre vertical leap no less. However, I have dunked a basketball roughly 100-150 times in my lifetime.

How was I able to overcome these physical limitations and achieve my goal of dunking a basketball? Continue reading…

8 Ways to Rise Above the Noise

I don’t know about you, but I have grown weary and resentful of all the negative news I read and hear these days. The steady drone of articles about the Clinton’s, President Trump and his campaign advisers, the Russian dossier, Uranium One scandal, the NFL player protests, and so forth. It’s exhausting!

What’s the solution? We can turn-off the TV, cancel our subscription to the newspaper, or our social media accounts, boycott the NFL, etc. However, being an isolationist is not a solution, its creative avoidance. The very real challenges we must overcome to ‘Make America Great Again’ are still present and unabated.

How can we rise above the noise and turn our attention to solving real-world problems? Continue reading…

Is Today the Day?

From the day we are born, our lives move us toward what will be an inevitable ending. It’s part of the circle of life. We are born, we die, but everything in between is where life truly happens. Each day we are given is a blessing to be celebrated. The most extraordinary thing is that our lives can be forever changed in the blink of an eye, by a single event or a single step.

“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” – Psalm 118:24

Our lives move in ebbs and flows, much like our breathing. Some movement occurs as a result of outside forces beyond our control. For the most part, however, our choices are what ultimately determine the direction our lives will take.

Is today the day? The day you finally take the first step toward making those life changes required to make your goals and dreams a reality? Is this day one, or just another day in the life? The choice is yours and yours alone. You decide. Continue reading…

Don’t Give Away Your Power

“If you think you have power, you have power. If you don’t think you have power, you have no power.” – Michael Korda

Our brains are vast neural networks comprised of knowledge, experiences and thoughts, both good and bad. It has been scientifically proven that negative thinking and chronic complaining, can rewire the brain. Likewise, 12 minutes of daily prayer over an 8-week period can change the brain to such an extent that it can be measured on a brain scan.

Let go of ‘stinking thinking’.

When I consider how negative thinking and chronic complaining can affect our lives, and infect the lives of others, I’m reminded of the Israelites. According to Scripture, they were enslaved by their Egyptian rulers for 430 years. When they were finally able to obtain their freedom, it took them 40 years to travel from Egypt to the Land of Canaan (the Promised Land).  A journey that should have only taken approximately 30 days.

Why did it take the Israelites 40 years to travel 250 miles to reach the Promised Land? Continue reading…

Handled With Care Goes LIVE!

World Cancer Day was Saturday, February 4, 2017. Symbolically, Handled with Care was officially launched on the same day.

Handled with Care is truly a labor of love, and the brainchild of my amazingly talented daughter, Melanie Carroll.

At 1:45 am on March 4th of last year, our lives were changed forever. That was when I received the call from the Hospice Care unit that Laura, my wife of 38 years and Melanie’s mother, had passed away. To say we were all heartbroken and devastated is an understatement. However, through our family’s pain and sadness, grief and tears, Melanie was able to find an incredible way to give back to so many others who are suffering with this horrible disease, and to honor her Mom’s memory.

Melanie’s Story

No one wants to see a loved one suffer, but a cancer diagnosis and the treatment that follows is especially difficult. My own mom was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer after 11 years in remission – and it was beyond devastating. She fought so bravely and remained so strong and positive, but I still felt helpless. Continue reading…

Bring the Other “I” Word Back

It’s time, or more accurately, it is long overdue. It is time to bring the other “I” word back. You know the one I’m talking about, not the “it’s all about me” I word, but the other one. Integrity.

Somewhere along the way we got lost. Exactly when did integrity get stricken from our vocabulary in terms of our conduct and moral code? Regardless, it’s time to find our way back. Both as individuals and as a nation, integrity should be one of the cornerstones of our value system. Otherwise, mankind’s future looks rather bleak doesn’t it?

Integrity

Integrity is defined as “the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness”. Words like honesty, honor, morals, righteousness, virtue, fairness, sincerity, and trustworthiness come to mind when we consider people with integrity. As a nation, integrity is defined as “the state of being whole and undivided”. In this context, the common synonyms include unity, cohesion, togetherness and solidarity.

The recent Presidential campaign has once again revealed the dark side of humanity. If this is a reflection of what we can expect from our new leaders in government, then we are in trouble. However, we are not immune to criticism here either. With the elections finally over, it is time to step away from the campaign rhetoric, the social media bashing that has consumed us these past few years, and take a long, hard look at ourselves. Continue reading…

Don’t Overthink It … JUST LIVE!

In March of 2016, I lost the love of my life to metastatic breast cancer. For the first eight months after her death I struggled to put the pieces of my life back together, and to make sense of it all.

After a few months I stopped asking my #1 question, “Why did this happen?”, because I knew from attending grief counseling there would be no answer forthcoming. At least not in this lifetime. However, two burning questions still remained … “Who am I now?” and “What’s next?”

Stop Overthinking

For months, I had prayed about the two remaining questions during my ‘5K Faith Walks’ to no avail. Then something amazing happened during one of my walks. When I pressed for answers my ‘inner’ voice spoke to me. You know the one I’m talking about, right? That little voice in your head you hear on occasion when you are able to quiet your mind long enough to listen. The voice said …

What Shall We Talk About?

Henri Frederic Amiel once said that, “Everything you need for a better future and success has already been written”. If this is true, then what is left to talk about?

Ever suffer from writer’s block? Well, me too! I’ve been staring at the keyboard for some time now trying to come up with something new and informative to talk about that would capture the attention of my followers. And I’m drawing a blank. So I’ll pose the question to all of you …

What Shall We Talk About

What shall we talk about?

Let’s see, we could start with the ‘BIG 3’ … Sports, Politics and Religion. Continue reading…
