Are You Final Four Worthy?

The Men’s NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament is the sporting event I most look forward to each year. March Madness has been in full swing for the past several weeks with some of the very best matchups in tournament history.

Although I will not be collecting $1 billion from Warren Buffett this year, I did enter my bracket selections like I do every year. It is really not about the prize money. Now don’t get me wrong, I’d graciously accept it if I won. However, for me it’s more about enjoying great basketball games and seeing how many of the teams I selected are able to reach the Final Four.

What does it mean to be Final Four worthy?

Being Final Four worthy denotes you have paid your dues. You have taken on all competition, up to this point, on the road to success and have emerged victorious. In doing so, it means you’ve had to overcome many obstacles and adversity to reach this milestone. However, there is still work ahead in order to reach your ultimate goal – a national championship. So, don’t get comfortable!

Are you Final Four worthy?

Are you prepared to make the sacrifices required to be a champion? To answer this question, there are a number of take-aways from March Madness to consider that are fundamental to your success.

  1. Play to your strengths.
  2. Know the competition.
  3. Prepare and plan to win the game.
  4. The best talent doesn’t always win.
  5. Who’s hot and matchups are key.
  6. Don’t dwell on mistakes, learn from them.
  7. Share the ball – teamwork is essential.
  8. Practice daily to improve performance.
  9. Stay focused; don’t let setbacks derail you.
  10. Go hard on every play until the final buzzer.

Finally, be gracious in victory and defeat, but don’t get comfortable with either. As I have had to remind my sales teams on occasion, “today’s golden idol is tomorrow’s brass commode.”

The Road to the Final Four in basketball, business and in life requires a sustained commitment to growth and excellence. If you are willing to make the commitment necessary to be the best YOU, then I look forward to seeing you in the Winner’s Circle.

Enjoy the journey!
